The mount of Ganesh is a mouse called Mooshika. The mouse as Ganesha's charioteer has been interpreted variously. The Sanskrit word musaka means one who steals or robs.
What does the mouse of Ganesha signify?
Ganesha's act of riding the mouse symbolizes his ability to overcome negative inclinations such as theft, greed, desire, and ego. In essence, Hindu God Ganesha triumphs over the hindrances (thus earning the name Vignaharta) caused by different malevolent influences.
The rat symbolizes the royal aspect of existence. The connection between the rat and Ganesha indicates that the deity possesses the power to govern the destructive forces.
Rats are notorious for their rapid breeding. Consequently, in a symbolic sense, rats embody fertility and the capacity to multiply. Nevertheless, they are relentless creatures that wreak havoc by causing damage to grain and other resources. In this particular context, they symbolize greed and avarice.
However, when Ganesha mounts the rat, its negative attributes are subdued. At that point, the rat becomes associated with positive qualities such as astuteness, quick thinking, growth, and prosperity.
