Pataleeswarar Temple (பாடலீஸ்வரர் கோயில்) is one of the ancient temples in Tamil Nadu located in Thirupathiripuliyur, Cuddalore district. Pataleeswarar Temple holds historical importance as it was constructed during the Pallava and Medieval Chola periods.

According to legend, the revered Saivite saint Appar embraced Saivism at this very temple. It is also recognized as one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, which are revered shrines in the Saivite tradition.
Thirupathiripuliyur in Cuddalore stands as one of the oldest temples in Tamil Nadu. Its name is derived from the Pathiri Tree and the Puliyur, a saint with tiger-like legs who achieved redemption in this vicinity. Within the temple premises, there exists a grand temple car known as Theeruvadaichan, alongside a silver chariot and a golden chariot.

A popular belief or myth associated with this temple is that worshiping the deity here once is equivalent to worshiping Kashi Vishwanath Temple Varanasi 16 times, in Tiruvannamalai Arunachaleswarar Temple eight times, and in Thillai Natarajar Temple Chidambaram three times.
Temple Architecture
The temple is built in the Dravidian architectural style. It is known as Gnazhar Kovil, where the main deity is placed under Gnazhar trees. Trees such as Kondai, Kongu, and Theekku (teak) all belong to this category. Temples made of wood from Gnazhar trees are also referred to as Gnzhar Koil. The literary evidence of this can be found in the writings of Tirugnanasambandar, who mentions the temple as Gnazhar Koil.

Pataleeswarar Temple is just half a kilometer from Thirupathiripuliyur Railway Station. The temple is located in Thirupathiripuliyur and is easily accessible from Cuddalore town.
