This temple holds the distinction of being the first all-stone, white granite temple in the western hemisphere, with its construction commencing in 1990. On February 15, 1975, Sivaya Subramuniyaswami had a vision of Lord Shiva walking on the land where Iraivan Temple now stands. This vision inspired the creation of the temple.
