Gajalakshmi, alternatively spelled as Gajalaxmi, holds immense importance as one of the prominent Ashtalakshmi forms of the Hindu deity of prosperity, Lakshmi. Gajalakshmi is revered for her ability to grant and represent affluence, prosperity, abundance, fertility, and overall well-being.
Gajalakshmi - One of the forms of Lakshmi
According to Hindu mythology, Gajalakshmi is believed to have brought back the wealth and power that Indra had lost during the churning of the ocean, known as Samudra Manthana. Gajalakshmi is considered to be the embodiment of animal wealth and other symbols of prosperity that signify strength.
In numerous temples across Goa and Konkan, Gajalakshmi is revered as a deity of fertility, often referred to as Gajantlakshmi, Gajalakshmi, Kelbai or Bhauka devi, by different Konkani communities who consider her as their patron goddess.
Notable Gajalakshmi Idols in Temples
Cave 14 at Ellora features a portrayal of Gajalakshmi seated on a lotus, while temples in Odisha, built in the Kalinga architectural style, often have a figure of Gajalakshmi in lalitasana as their central protective image over the doorway or sanctuary. Additionally, the Temple of Bantãy Srĕi in Siem Reap, Cambodia boasts a beautifully sculpted image of the Goddess Gajalakshmi in pink sandstone on one of its tympana, which has remained in excellent condition despite being over a thousand years old.
