Chaturmukha Basadi Jain Temple Karkala Karnataka

Chaturmukha Basadi in Karkala, Karnataka, is a famous Jain temple renowned for its symmetrical design. As one of the most prominent landmarks in Karkala, it derives its name from the four identical faces it possesses, hence the term "chaturmukha" meaning "four faces" in Sanskrit, and "basadi" referring to Jain temples in South India.

Situated amidst coconut plantations and paddy fields, Chaturmukha Basadi is elevated on a field, adding to its picturesque setting. With its impressive architecture, Chaturmukha Basadi boasts 108 granite pillars. This temple is unique in that it is open on all four sides, featuring four identical doorways that lead to the inner sanctum known as Gurba Gruha. These doorways showcase intricate carvings of Jain Thirthankaras, as well as Hindu deities.

Within the temple, you can find images of Tirthankara Aranath, Mallinath, and Munisuvratnath. This basadi, constructed entirely from carved granite rocks, is also known as Tribhuvana Tilaka Jina Chaityalaya or Ratnatraya dhama, as mentioned in the inscriptions. Notably, it faces the renowned Karkala Bahubali statue, which was installed on 13th February 1432, by Veera Pandya of the Santara dynasty, following the instructions of the Bhattaraka of Karkala, Lalitakeerti.
