Four Types of Navaratri Festival - Navratri Utsav

Navaratri, also spelled Navratri, is an annual Hindu festival observed in honour of the goddess Durga, an aspect of Adi Parashakti, the supreme goddess. It spans over nine nights.

Navaratri is an annual Hindu festival observed in honour of the goddess Durga, an aspect of Adi Parashakti, the supreme goddess. It spans over nine nights.There are total four types of Navratri.These are sharadiya Navratri, Chaitra Navratri, Magha Gupt Navratri and Ashadha Gupt Navratri. It is a time when Hindus celebrate the goddess Durga for killing the demon, Mahishasura. All the nine days of the festival are dedicated to each distinct avatar of the goddess; and each of these days has a significant colour attached to it, which devotees are expected to wear while taking part in the festivities.

 1) Sharadiya Navratri

Every year, Shardiya Navratri starts on the next day after the end of Pitru Paksha. According to the Hindu calendar, Pitru Paksha ends with the celebration of the festival of Sarvapitri Amavasya on the Amavasya date of Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month. Then Shardiya Navratri, which lasts for 9 days, starts from the Pratipada date of Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month. During these 9 days, 9 different forms of Maa Durga are worshipped.In Hindu religion, the festival of Shardiya Navratri is celebrated with great pomp and show.

2)  Chaitra Navratri

The festival of Navratri has unique glory for progressive seekers on the spiritual path. 'Shivratri', which falls throughout the year, is a time for the seeker to enter into spiritual practice, while 'Navratri' is the nine nights of festive renewal. Durga Puja and Navratri symbolize mental-physical and spiritual strength. The history of Ram's birth and establishment of Ramrajya is associated with Navratri of Chaitra. For this reason this Navratri is of utmost importance.

3) Magha Gupt Navratri 

Apart from Chaitra and Shardiya Navratri, there are also two Gupt Navratri. One Gupta Navratri falls in the month of Magha and the other in the month of Ashadha. In the year 2023, the first Gupt Navratri will fall in the month of Magh. According to religious beliefs, ten Mahavidyas are worshiped during Gupt Navratri. During this period, from Pratipada to Navami Tithi, nine different forms of Goddess Durga are worshipped.

4) Ashadha Gupt Navratri.

Ashadh month has started with the arrival of Sun in Gemini. In this month, Ashadh Gupt Navratri starts from the Pratipada date of Shukla Paksha.Gupt Navratri of Ashadh month has great importance from religious and spiritual point of view. There are four Navratris in a year. In which devotees celebrate Sharadiya and Chaitra Navratri of Ashwin month with great pomp. These are called manifest Navratri.
