The Hindu epic Mahabharata describes, Bharata as the son of King Dushyanta and Shakuntala. He was a descendant of the Lunar dynasty of the Kshatriya Varna. Bharata was a legendary emperor and the founder of the Bharata Dynasty. He was the ancestor of both the Pandavas and the Kauravas. Bharata had a son named Bhumanyu.
There are two stories heard related to the birth of Bhumanyu. The first story says that Bharata married Sunanda, who was the daughter of King Sarvasena of Kasi Kingdom. In this relationship he had a son named Bhumanyu. According to the second story, Bhumanyu was born from a great sacrifice that Bharata performed for the Rishi Bharadwaja.
Kalidasa's famous play Abhijnanashakuntalam tells the story of Bharata's birth and about his parents.
