Vishu Festival 2022 April 15

Vishu is a Hindu festival celebrated in South India mainly Kerala. Vishu signifies the Hindu New Year and falls on the first day in the Malayalam month of Medam. People all over the state celebrates Vishu with pomp and mirth. It is also celebrated as Bisu in Mangalore and Udupi districts of Karnataka, India. Vishukkani and Vishukaineettam are the main event of Vishu festival. In 2022, Vishu falls on April 15, Friday.

Vishu Festival Rituals

The main rituals of Vishu are Vishukkani and Vishukaineetam. Vishukkani means sighting the most auspicious thing at dawn on the Vishu day for being lucky throughout the year. Vishukaineetam means gifting money to children, servants and tenants by elders of the family.

Famous stories behind the celebration of Vishu festival are:

The most popular story of Vishu is about Lord Krishna and demon king Narakasura. The story says that, it is on Vishu day Lord Sri Krishna killed the demon Narakasura. So people celebrates Visu as a victory of good over evil.

Another story, which is not so popular is related with the demon king Ravana and Lord Surya. The story goes like this, Ravana had never allowed the Sun God to rise from the East. And after Ravana’s death it was on Vishu day, that Lord Surya started to rise from the East. Some people celebrate Vishu to commemorate the return of Surya deva.
