Ugadi or Yugadi is celebrated as the Telugu New Year by people of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Yugadi is the Sanskrit word which means "the beginning of a new age". It is a combination of two words “Yuga” which means “age” and “Adi” which means “beginning”. On this day new Samvatsara, which is the cycle of sixty years, begins. Ugadi is New Year according to Luni-Solar calendar. This year 2024 Yugadi festival is on April 4.
Ugadi is celebrated as Gudi Padwa by the people of Maharashtra. Both Ugadi and Gudi Padwa are celebrated on the same day.
The Nyepi festival, celebrated by the Hindus of Bali and Indonesia, falls on the same day. Nyepi is the new year according to the Hindu Balinese saka calendar.
