Cheti Chand festival is one of the important festival celebrated by Sindhi community. The day marks the New Year Day by Sindhi people of India and Pakistan. According to the Hindu calendar, it falls on the second day of Chaitra Shukla Paksha. Usually it is celebrated one day after Ugadi and Gudi Padwa. This year, Cheti Chand is celebrated on 2 April 2022.
The festival of Cheti Chand is celebrated in honour of the birth anniversary of Ishtadeva Uderolal, popularly known as Jhulelal, the patron saint of the Sindhis. The Sindhi community consider this day to be very auspicious and is celebrated with pomp and gaiety. Devotees on this special day worship "water – the elixir of life".
Rituals
On this day, Sindhis take Baharana Sahib to a nearby river or lake. Baharana Sahib consists of Jyot (Oil lamp), Crystal Sugar, Cardamom, Fruits, and Akha. Behind is Kalash (Water jar) and a coconut in it, covered with cloth, flowers and leaves. There is also a Murti of Pujya Jhulelal Devta.
