The temple, constructed more than 1000 to 2000 years old, enshrines a Swayambhu Murti of Lord Nagraja or Snake Vasuki, the King of Serpents. The temple is located on the heart of Nagercoil town. In Tamil language, “Nager” means snake and “kovil” means temple; the town derives its name after the temple.

Ananda Krishna is also worshipped with primary importance in Nagercoil Nagaraja Temple. The Upa Devathas of the temple are Kasi Viswanatha, Kannimoola Ganapathi, Devi, Sastha, Balamuruga and Nagamani Bhoothathan. Nagaraja Temple features innumerable statues of serpents. Temple poojas are performed by priests from Pambummekkattu Mana (Illam) - a famous temple devoted to Serpent Gods in Thrissur, Kerala. Devotees perform abhishek to snake idols with milk and turmeric powder as a part of their prayers.

Temple Festivals

Thai Brahmotsavam Festival in the Tamil month of Thai (mid January – February) is the main festival of Nagercoil Temple. Aavani Aslesha (Aayilyam) Nakshatra day and the Sundays in the month of Tamil Aavani month are of great importance. Sree Krishna Jayanthi, Navarathri and Tirukarthikai are other religious festivals celebrated in the temple.
