Nilachal or Mount Nila is the adobe of Lord Jagannath. Also known as Niladri which means the Blue Mountain, Nilachal is located at Puri. The place is one of the four Char Dhams in Hinduism and is a principal and recurring motif in the Jagannath cult. Lord Jagannatha is an aspect of Vishnu and is usually worship on the Ratnavedi(jewelled platform) along with Balabhadra and Subhadra.
The place is of great religious importance; many Hindu teachers including Shri Ramanuja Acharya, Swami Vishnuswami (founder of Rudra Sampradaya), Shri Nimbarka Acharya and Guru Nanak Dev visited Nilachal. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu have spent 18 years at Nilachal dhama.
According to Skanda Purana, King Indradyumna of Avanti Kingdom in Mahabharata once dreamed of Nila Madhava being worshipped at the Nilachal mount. The king with great interest sent out messengers and priests in search of the God. One of Indradyumna’s priests Vidyapati located Niladri Mountain and Nila Madhava at the Purusottam Kshetra.
