Nellaiappar Temple in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is one of the largest Hindu temples in India. The temple is believed to be constructed more than 2500 - 3000 years ago. Situated in the heart of ThirThe temple enshrines Lord Shiva as Swami Nellaiappar and Goddess Parvathi as Thiru Kanthimathi Ambal.
Nellaiappar Arultharum Kanthimathi Amman Temple, is noted for its brilliant sculptural splendors, 1000 pillared hall, Mani Mandapam (musical pillars hall), Somavara Mandapam, Tamra sabha with intricate wood work, and the Vasantha Mandapam. The temple car of Nellaiappar Temple, weighing 400 ton and having steel, is regarded as the third largest temple car in India. The Golden Chariot procession is held on every day at 7 PM.
Nellaiappar Shiva Temple was built by Muluthukanda Rama Pandiyan. According to ancient stone inscriptions, Nellaiappar Thirukovil in olden days were known by the names Venuvanam, Nellur, Saliveli, Salivadi, SaliNagar, Tharugavanam and KeezhaVempu Naattu Kulasekara Sathurvethi Mangalam.

Festivals
Brahmotsavam Festival in the Tamil month of Aani (mid June to mid July) is the important festival celebrated at Nellaiappar Temple which last for an extended period of time than usual temple festival. Navaratri, Tirukkalyanam in Aippasi (mid Oct – mid Nov) and Arudra Darisanam are some other important festivals.
Thirukalyanam, Thiruvathira, Karthigai Vazhipadu, Aaruthra Festival, Prathosam Pooja, Chitra Pournami and Masi Magam are also observed with great religious importance.
During the annual Thaipoosam Festival, Swami Nellaiappar and Thiru Kanthimathi Ambal are taken to Thaipoosa Mandapam (the banks of Thamirabarani River in Tirunelveli junction). After special rituals there the deities are taken back to the temple.
