Nagnajiti Ashtabharya of Krishna

Nagnajiti is one of the eight prominent consorts of the Hindu Lord Krishna. Also known as Satya or Nappinnai, she is the sixth in preference, among the eight of them. Krishna was the king of Dwarka and Nagnajiti was the daughter of the King Nagnajita – the ruler of Kosala empire. He arranged for a Swayamvara for his daughter’s marriage and Krishna participated in it. The marriage happened only when Krishna won an extremely difficult task with his wit and won Nagnajiti for his wife.

Family and references

She is called Satya Nagnajiti by the various Puranas namely Bhagwata Purana, Vishnu Purana and Harivamsha Purana. Though her name brings out the simple meaning of “the daughter of Nagnajit”, the meaning also translates into something equivalent to “virtuous”. It must also be mentioned that her father was the King of Kosala whose capital was Ayodhya. The Mahabharata also mentions about a wife of Krishna named Satya.
