Kumaranalloor Devi Temple in Kottayam is one of the 108 Durga Temples in Kerala created by Lord Parasurama. The temple history dates back to more than 2400 years old.
Kumaranalloor Devi Temple of Goddess Kathyayani
The presiding deity of Kumaranalloor Temple is Goddess Kathyayani (Katyayini), a form of Mother Goddess Bhagawati. Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya has mentioned Kumaranalloor Devi Temple as one of the Pancha mahakshetrams (five main temples) in India where you will feel the full presence of Devi and he has given the first position to this temple.
The main gopuram (entrance) of the temple faces towards the east. The temple architecture is noted for its unique structure of Nalambalam and Sreekovil both of which have been built in the Sree Chakra style. The Sreekovil is a two-storied building with carved stones in basement.
Kumaranalloor temple is also noted for its rare murals; the outer walls of the sanctum sanctorum is adorned with beautiful paintings from Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Hindu gods and goddesses. The sub deities of the temple are Lord Shiva, Manibhooshan (Lord Ayyappa), Aalingal Bhagavathy (a form of Goddess Bhadrakali).
Some of the main offerings to goddess include Bhadradeepam, Kadum Payasam, Manjal Abhishekam, Pantheerayiram Archana and Chuttuvilaku. Special offerings include Udayasthamana pooja (poojayum villakkum) and Chathushatham (payasam offering).
Kumaranalloor Thrikkarthika Utsavam is the annual festival celebrated in the month of Vrishchikam (mid November – mid December).
Other festivals celebrated include Meena Pooram, Uthrittathi vallamkali, Navarathri, Maha Shivarathry, and Dhwaja prathishta day.
