Thulabharam in Hindu Temples

Thulabharam is an important offering by devotees in Hindu temples. Thulabharam is offering materials such as jiggery, tulsi leaves, sugar, butter, coconut, gold or any materials greater than the weight of the devotee to the temple deity. In this ritual, a devotee sits on one side of a weighing pan and the other side is filled with materials greater than the devotee weight. Thulabharam is common with newborn babies and children. However, elders also perform the ritual as an offering. Some people conduct the ritual to get rid of any diseases, while some other performs it for advancement in life. Guruvayoor Sree Krishna Temple in Kerala is one of the most famous temples where Thulabharam is conducted.

Thulabharam ritual in Hindu Temples

In famous temples, the temple authorities will arrange the materials for thulabharam ritual using common materials like coconut, fruits and banana. If the devotee wants to perform Thulabharam using special flowers or other materials, then the authorities should be informed at least one day before or the devotee should bring them. In some temples, non Hindus can also perform this ritual; for them the Thulabharam facility will be outside the sanctum.
