Baidyanath Jyotirlinga Temple Story

Baidyanath Jyotirlinga Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiv. There are several legends associated with Baidyanath Jyotirlinga located in Deogarh, Jharkhand, India. According to one legend, the demon Ravana, king of Lanka, worshipped Lord Shiva and requested him to come to Lanka. Though the Lord did not agree to his prayer, he told Ravana that he could take his Jyotirlinga to Lanka. He conditioned that the lingam should not be deposited anywhere on the earth on his way. And if the lingam was placed anywhere on the earth, it would be fixed to that spot forever. Agreeing the condition, Ravana took the lingam and started his journey. However the gods did not want Ravana to own the Jyotirlinga and they planned a trick. As per the plan, Varuna, the god of the water, entered the stomach of Ravana. In consequence, the demon wanted to fall to earth to release him.

In a while, Lord Vishnu, manifested himself as an old Brahmin, emerged before Ravana. The Lord, after his descend to the earth, started to chat with him. As planned, Ravana requested the Brahmin to hold the Jyotirlinga for a few minutes so that he could relieve himself, to which the Lord agreed. When Ravana turned around, Lord Vishnu left the Jyotirlinga on the spot and disappeared. On returning, he found that the Jyotirlinga was firmly fixed to the earth and understood the trick played on him. The irritated Ravana pressed the linga with his thumb. It went inside and got slanted a little. Later, he failed in the task of removing the lingam and so he started worshipping the idol, everyday. The spot where the lingam was placed is known as Babadham.
