Subramaniyaswami Thirukoil, popularly known as, Vallakkottai Murugan Temple is located in the town of Vallakottai near Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This ancient 1200 years old temple, built by King Bagiradha, is situated on the highway between Sriperumbudur and Singaperumalkoil near Chengalpattu. The Subramaniya Swamy idol in this temple is the tallest of Lord Muruga statues in Tamil Nadu, which makes the temple unique among the others. The seven feet height statue has Lord Muruga with Goddess Valli and Devayani (Devasena) on both sides. The temple has a tank known as Vajra theertham, believed to be created by the Vajrayudha of Lord Indra.
Legend
Legend has it that once Lord Indra (Lord of Devas) wanted to worship Lord Subramanya and approached sage Bhrgu, who showed him the Vallakkottai Temple. Indra created the temple tank with his Vajrayudham for performing abhisheka since then the temple tank was named as Vajra theerththam. It is believed that a holy dip in the tank by chanting the mantra "OM Saravanabhava" would end all miseries.
