Ernakulam Shiva Temple Festival 2023 is celebrated from 24th January to 2nd February 2023. Popularly known as Ernakulathappan Temple, this ancient Shiva temple is one of the major temples of Kerala, located at the downtown area of the city of Kochi. The annual festival (Uthsavom in Malayalam language) is celebrated for 8 days in the Makaram month in Kerala, usually January – February.
Ernakulathappan Temple festival is one of the grandest festivals conducted in Ernakulam city. The festival begins with the Kodiyettam (hoisting of the temple flag) on the first day evening. Sheeveli is arranged inside the temple on all the festival days accompanied by Chendamelam. Special poojas and cultural programs to promote temple arts are arranged on these days. Kathakali, Ottamthullal, Thayambaka, Paatakam, and devotional bhajans are organized on uthsavam days. Annadanam is conducted by the temple for devotees.
The seventh day of the festival is the much delightful one – On this day Pakalpooram is conducted and Ernakulathappan is taken out in a grand procession with caparisoned elephants and Panchavadyam. Pandimelam and colourful fire works at night is a feast for the devotees eyes. The final day of the festival is the Arattu day and the deity is taken for the holy bath in the temple tank in procession with the accompaniment of Panchavadyam.
