Onam festival is not complete without onam celebrations and customary events which are organized all over the state. Onam is one of the biggest festival in Kerala, celebrated for 10 days with numerous events organized by clubs and Kerala tourism department. Below are some of the main Onam celebrations which are attracted by tourists and locals alike. Festival celebrations begins on Atham day and continue for 10 days till Thiruvonam.

Procession of Decorated Elephants during Onam
Procession of decorated elephants during Onam festival is mainly held at Thrissur, the cultural capital of Kerala. The elephants are beautifully decorated and taken in procession around the streets. It offers a glorious sight to the viewers, with songs and dances.
Tripunithura Athachamayam
Thripoonithura Athachamayam is a grand procession held on the first day of Atham at Thirpunithura and Piravam. The parade marks the beginning of Onam and commemorates the majestic tradition of travel to the Thripunithura Fort by the Maharajas of erstwhile Kochi State. This custom is followed even today with performances by folk artistes, ornamented elephants, musical groups and dance shows.
Vallamkali or Snake Boat Race
Vallamkali or the Snake Boat Race is the most captivating event of all activities. Held a few days before Onam, the event is conducted at many places in Kerala. Notable among them is the one organized at Alappuzha, called the Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race. The Chundan Vallams are beautifully decorated and the rhythm of the songs and music of the drum attract tourists from all over the world.
Onam Celebrations in Cheruthuruthy
Cheruthuruthy, a small village in the north of Thrissur district, is famous for the Kerala Kalamandalam, the Kathakali Training Centre. Kathakali, the classical Dance-Drama of Kerala, is performed here by the finest artists of the state. Enactments from the scenes of epics and folk tales fascinate the audience.
Aranmula Uthrittathi Boat Race on Onam
Aranmula Uthrittathi Vallamkali is enthralling boat event takes place on the day of Uthrittathi Asterism at Aranmula. The event is organized to recall the myth that describes the story of Lord Krishna who crossed the river on that particular day. No competition is held here because it is believed that the soul of the Lord is present on all the boats. People offer Valla Sady as an offering in the temples during the occasion.
