Temple Legend
According to legends, Pooradam Thirunal Maharaja, popularly known as Devanarayanan, ruled Chembakassery. As he decided to construct a Sree Krishna Temple in Ambalappuzha, the king placed an idol of Lord Krishna there. However, he thought that the place which he first decided to keep the idol was not good. So he started to search for another idol. Vilvamangalam Swami (a Brahmin saint and an ardent devotee of Lord Guruvayoorappan who lived during the middle of 17th century in Kerala) told the king that the idol of Thiruvanvandoor temple and Kurichi Karinkulam Temple could be chosen for this purpose.
Hence, the Chembakassery militants proceeded to Thiruvanvandoor temple and asked the chief priest named Njazhappally Namboothiri to offer them the Krishna’s idol placed in the temple. But, the priest was not interested to hand over the idol. The scared priest, fearing the response of the king, drowned the idol in a river flowing nearby the east side of temple. It is said that the missing idol was recovered in May1963. Mazhuveli Sree Damodaran, a teacher in Govt Middle school (Thiruvanvandoor) had a dream, in which God showed him the idol lying east side of the temple. After 51 days of hard work, the idol was found by a devotee named Sree Sadha Nandhan. Commemorating this event, a 51-day Vigrahalabdhi Smaraka Yagjam is held here.
