Lord Hrishikesha is one of the 24 Keshava Namas of Lord Vishnu. In Vishnu Sahasranama Stotra, Hrishikesha comes as the 47th name of the Lord. Kesavanamas are those names which are recited at the beginning of all Vedic pujas. The name Hrishikesha literally means one who is the God of senses (Hrishik) or the Lord who rules the Panchendriya or the five senses.
Adi Shankaracharya had given various meanings for Hrishikesa in the commentary on Vishnu Sahasranama. They are
1) The master of the senses
2) He under whose control the senses subsist
3) He who controls his five senses
Another meaning of Hrishikesha is that "One whose hairs consist of the rays of Surya and Chandra which give joy to the world."
