Garbarakshambigai Temple Thirukarugavur

Garbarakshambigai Temple in Thirukarugavur is a famous Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati temple located just 20 km from Thanjavur. The significance of temple is that couples having problem with pregnancy can worship the goddess to get children. Women who are pregnant also visit the temple to perform special poojas for a safe and normal delivery.

Patteeswaram Durgai Temple

Patteeswaram Temple is an ancient Chola temple located near Kumbakonam, around 35 km from Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. The temple with five majestic gopurams is dedicated to Lord Dhenupureeswarar and his consort Gyanambigai. It is said that Goddess Durga was installed in the temple by Cholas. Durga Devi, also known here as Vishnu Durga, is seen with three eyes and eight hands and stands over the body of demon Mahishasura.

Swamimalai Murugan Temple

Swamimalai Murugan Temple is one of the six holy temples of Lord Muruga and is located around 32 km from Thanjavur. The Murugan temple is atop a 60 ft hillock while the shrine of Lord Shiva (Sundareswarar) and Goddess Parvati (Meenakshi) is located downhill.

Airavatesvara Temple Darasuram

Airavatesvara Temple in Darasuram is a 12th century shrine located around 38 km from Thanjavur in Tamilnadu. The temple originally called Raja Rajeswaram, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Shiva is known here are Airavateshvara and Parvati as Periya Nayaki Amman. The sanctum of Irawatheeswarar Temple is in the form of a chariot drawn by Horses. Built by Raja Raja Chola II, Airavatesvara Temple is declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is referred to as the Great Living Chola Temples.

Uppliyappan Koil

Oppiliappan Koil is a famous Lord Narayana temple situated 46 km from Thanjavur and 6 km from Kumbhakonam. Also known as Thiruvinnagar, the Uppliyappan Temple enshrines Lord Uppiliappan Perumal with his consort Bhumi Devi and her father sage Markandeya. Oppiliappan Temple is widely regarded as “South Tirupathi”.

Thiruvidaimarudur Mahalingaswamy Temple

Thiruvidaimaruthur Temple is located around 48 km from Thanjavur and 8 km from Kumbhakonam. The presiding deity is Mahalingeswarar. It is believed that Lord Shiva worshipped himself here to demonstrate the Saivite worship procedures to Saptharishis. Thiruvidaimarudur Mahalinga Swamy Temple is also one of the Sakthi Peetams. Goddess Parvati is known here as Perunamulaiyammai.
