Gopashtami or Gopastami is an auspicious Hindu festival celebrated on the Ashtami day of Shukla Paksha (8th day of the bright moon night) in the month of Kartik.
Gopashtami or the Festival of Cows is observed on the day when Lord Krishna and Lord Balarama first took the cows for herding. Devotees take Goshtashtami Vrata and Go Puja (Cow Worship) is performed on this day. In 2023, Gopashtami festival is on 20 November.
The Goshtashtami Festival in South India is a similar ritual which is celebrated in the Margashirsh month (November – December).

Worship of cows is held on most Lord Krishna temples on this day. Devotees cleanse Goshala (cowshed) and bathe their cows and perform Go Pooja. Cows are beautifully decorated and taken to temples.
