Thiruthani Murugan Temple dedicated to Lord Subramanyaswamy is located in the township of Thiruthani in Thiruvallur district of Tamilnadu, India. The temple is about 50 km north of Chennai en-route to the famous Tirupathi Venkateshwara Temple. Subramanya Swami Kovil at Tiruttani is the fifth shrine among the Arupadaiveedu (the six holy abodes) of Lord Muruga. Tiruttani represents the place where the Lord stayed after destroying the demon, Soorapadman. Hindu traditions say that it is here that Lord Murugan married Valli, the daughter of a hunting tribe chieftain. Tiruttani is also known by several names such as Kunruthor Adal, Thanigachalam, Santhipuri and Skandagiri.
Legend of Thiruthani Murugan Temple
According to legend, Lord Muruga fought a battle called Soorasamharam at Tiruchendur to kill the demon, Soorapadman. He took Tiruthani as his abode after vanquishing the demon. Therefore, at Tiruthani, the Lord is known to be in a very calm state, particularly after marrying Valli (a girl from hunter community who did severe penance to attain oneness with Lord Thanigesan). Legend also says that the Lord took various forms such as a hunter and an old man to test the firmness of Valli. The Lord was helped by his brother, Lord Ganesh, in his efforts to marry Valli. Lord Ganesh disguised himself in the form of a mad elephant and scared her. She sought protection from the old man, none other than Lord Subramanya himself.
