Story of Goddess Dhumavati

There is an interesting legend behind the incarnation of Goddess Dhumavati. Legend has it that Goddess Parvati was severely hungry once she was in Kailash with Lord Siva. She presented her inability to afford hunger and begged him for some food. Since he was in meditation, he was not in a position to meet her needs. Because of her unaffordable hunger she decided to eat her husband Mahadeva. She is found satisfied after swallowing him which made herself a widow. When Lord Siva awakened from meditation the radiant energy from his third eye transformed the goddess to fumes. This myth highlights the destructive nature of Goddess Dhumavati. Because of this, she is believed to be the woman of bad omen. As per the chanting verses, Goddess Dhumavati is unclean, unsteady, unpleasant and angry in her features. However, Tantrikas worship her for supernatural powers.
