Khairatabad is located in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh and is the location is popular for the annual Ganesh Chathurthi festival which lasts for ten days. Also known as Mammoth Ganapathi idol, the idol of Lord Ganesh worshipped during this festival is extraordinarily tall and large. On the final day of the festival, the idol is taken in procession to immerse the same in Hussein Sugar Lake. Devotees from different parts of the country visit Khairatabad for seeing this colorful event. Each year the construction of the idol is carried out with an intention to display some specialties to the viewers. Usually, the Ganesh idol will be in standing posture whereas in certain rare occasions the same is made sitting on a throne for blessing the devotees. On either side of the Ganesh statue there will be idols of other Hindu gods and goddess.
Khairatabad Ganesh Chathurthi Festival
The construction of this spectacular Khairatabad Ganapathi statue starts long before the Ganesh Chathurthi festival and completes before the ten day celebrations commence. This gigantic Ganesh idol is being made by numerous workers including sculptors, painters and skilled persons. They work day and night and finish the idol in time. The materials required for the construction of this idol is steel, plaster of Paris, Organic water and color paints. Usually the weight of this colossal statue comes about 17 tones. The steel material required for this idol is nearly 12 tones whereas the weight of the plaster of Paris is more than 5 tones. The weight of Laddu that is being kept in the hand of this idol will be nearly 30 tones. This sweet recipe is later distributed among the devotees. The completed Ganesh idol will have more than 55 feet height. Thus, the overall construction cost of this statue comes nearly 20 lakhs.
