ReplyDeleteI don't know any Malayalam but I know meaning of a few words in this song. the whole song describes how beautiful Lord Krishna is looking-chethi,mandar,tulasi,malakal are all different kinds of flowers and herbs. Mayalpeeli chudi kondum etc means Lord is wearing reshmi pitambar. Aghadiye madiyante ashru veene kudirnore probably means tears started flowing down the eyes from the devotee. Avalpothi is something meaning rice grains or avalakki in kannada or pohe in Marathi . I am sorry for the poor translation even I am waiting for exact translation of this beautiful rendition.

ReplyDeleteLet me take a stab at this. I am no expert in Malayalam, so if someone more knowledgeable than me chimes in, that would be great. With that, here is what, I think, it means. As Sanatani described it is about Guruvayoorappa (Lord Krishna). The devotee is saying that she would like to get a darshan (she wants the lord to appear before her) in the way she is describing.
ReplyDeleteFirst line says that she would like to see Krishna bedecked with garlands made from those different flowers -- Chethi is a red color flower mostly found in Kerala (look up Ixora Coccinea on Wikipedia), mandaram is a white colored flower (look up Bauhinia on wikipedia), then Tulasi is of course tulasi in telugu or most Indian languages (Holy basil), pichakam is Jasmine (malle poovu in telugu)
Then she says, come in front of me with peacock feather (mayil peeli) in your hair, wrapped in yellow cloth/peethambar (manja thookil) and playing your flute (manikuzhal oothi kondum)
The next stanza describes the beautiful body of the lord and says,
I want the lord appear before me in that beautiful body, that all Gopikas yearned for, and right after when Vakacharthu (a form of ritual in which the lord is fully covered with Vaka (a medicinal plant -- Albizia Lebeck in English or Shirish in Hindi) powder and then bathed) is finished, and the lord is adorned with sweet smelling flower (vasana poovu).
Let me split the last stanza into smaller chunks to translate
Agathi means one who does not have any means – destitute/poor
Adiyen – is a form of how a slave/servant addresses themselves when referring themselves to God/master. So here the devotee is saying, “my poor/destitute self”
“Ashru veenu kuthirnnoru avilpothi” means -- packet of avil (poha) that has been soaked by the tears of this poor/destitute self”
So, in the last stanza the devotee is saying, I want your darshan to accept, from me, a packet of poha that has been soaked by my tears.
That’s about it. Of course, the lines themselves appear to be very simple, but the way they have been pieced together by Vayalaar, and the way Susheelamma rendered it, along with the innocence oozing face of Sharadamma all give it an everlasting touch to it.
