Pataleshwar Caves are ancient cave temples located in the Jungli Maharaja road in Pune, in Maharashtra state of India. Also known as Panchaleshvara or Bamburde, this 8th century temple build in the Rashtrakuta period is dedicated to Lord Pateleshwar, a form of Lord Shiva. Pateleshwara literally means the God of Underworld. The temple houses a Shiva Linga, the symbol of Lord Shiva. There is a circular Nandi mandapa in front of the cave. There are idols of Lord Ram, Sita, Lakshman, Lord Ganesh and Goddess Lakshmi placed in a cube shaped room at the main worship center.
The Pataleshwar Cave Temple appears as if it was created from a single rock and well resembles the one in Ellora Caves. At the entrance of this cave temple it is very spectacular to see one circular stone arranged geometrically in exotic style. The gigantic pillars in this rock-cut cave are the main attraction here.
