Valluvar Kottam Thiruvalluvar Monument Chennai

Valluvar Kottam is one of the popular tourist attractions in Chennai, situated at the intersection of the Kodambakkam High Road and Village Road in Tamil Nadu. Valluvar Kottam is a temple like monument dedicated to Tamil philosopher and saint Thiruvalluvar. The monument was constructed in 1976 by the then Chief Minister of Tamilnadu, M. Karunanidhi.

Tourist Attractions of Valluvar Kottam

Valluvar Kottam looks like a temple chariot and is made of around 3000 blocks of stone. Designed by South Indian traditional architect V. Ganapati Sthapati, the 39 meter high chariot is the replica of the famous Tiruvarur Temple Chariot.

A life size statue of Thiruvalluvar can be seen inside the chariot. All the 1330 verses of Thirukkural, the noted work of Thiruvalluvar written about 2 000 years ago, are inscribed on bas-relief in the front hall corridors of Valluvar Kottam monument.

Valluvar Kottam also has an auditorium which can accommodate around 4,000 people
