The story of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati is also related to Holi Festival and is celebrated as Kama Dahanam. According to Hindu mythology Goddess Parvathi, daughter of Himalaya was attracted to Lord Shiva and wish to marry him. But Siva was under deep meditation. The celestial marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati is vital for the birth of a child who can only kill Tarakasura according to the boon given by Lord Brahma Dev. Demon Taraka was very cruel and wicked. He made the life of mankind miserable by his power.
Taraka Asura not only harmed the earthly people but also attacked the Devas who came for the help of people. He captured Deva Lokam and made Devas his servants. So the marriage of Shiva with Parvati became a necessary for all living beings. In order to awaken Lord Shiva from his meditation all the Gods and Goddess went to seek the help of Kamadeva (the God of Love). Though Kamadeva was feared to disturb Shiva’s meditation, knowing the importance of the situation agreed to do this for the wellness of the three worlds. Lord Kama Dev (Manmathan) left a floral love arrow which waked up Mahadeva’s Tapas. Lord Shiva was furious for disturbing his meditation and opened his third eye and made Kamadeva into ashes.
The moral of the story of Kama Deva and Kama Dahanam ritual is that a person should get rid of all his selfish desires with the burning of Holika. Holika Dahan is also celebrated in memory of this event.
