Thirunakkara Shiva Temple Arattu Festival

Thirunakkara Arattu Festival or Thirunakkara Aratu Utsavam is a famous Kerala temple festival celebrated in the Malayalam month of Meenam, at Thirunakkara Mahadevar Shiva Temple in Kottayam district of Kerala, India. Arattu festival is bathing ceremony held as part of annual festival in Hindu Temples of Kerala. 

Thirunakkara Arattu is held at the last day of the 10 days annual festival at Thirunakkara Shiva Temple. The major attraction of the festival is the nine caparisoned elephants take part in the Arattu procession, which starts in the afternoon. Folk arts and dances such as Mayilattom (peacock dance) and Velakali will be staged in the temple compound in the evening.

About Thirunakkara Temple

Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple is one of the oldest temples in Kottayam, Kerala. The temple was built by Thekkumkoor Maharajah around 5 centuries ago and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple built is traditional Kerala style of architecture is decorated with beautiful mural paintings and images of epic characters from the Hindu mythology.

Thirunakkara is situated at the heart of Kottayam town and hence is easily accessible from all parts of the state. Kottayam Railway Station is the nearest railway station to reach Thirunakkara.

Kottayam Bus Station operates regular bus services to major cities and towns in Kerala such as Kochi (Ernakulam), Peermede, Thiruvananthapuram, Idukki, Thekkady, and Munnar.
