Mundeshwari Devi Temple Kaura Bihar

Mundeshwari Devi Temple or Mundesvari Temple in Kaura is one of the oldest Hindu temples in Bihar, India. This ancient temple is situated on the Mundeshwari Hills in Kaimur District. The primary deities worshipped here are Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti. The temple comprises idol of Chatur Mukhalingam or Shiva Lingam with four faces. The Mukhalingam occupies centre stage in the temple. Lord Ganesh, Lord Surya (Sun God) and Maha Vishnu are other murtis worshiped here.

Mundeshwari Devi Temple is also considered as the oldest functional temple of world and is also one of the earliest specimens of Nagara temple architecture in Bihar. Here rituals and worship have been performed without a break. According to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the temple dates back 108 AD. The temple has been declared as a protected monument under ASI since 1915. Currently renovation works are under progress.

Important Festivals at Mundeshwari Devi Temple 


The important festivals celebrated here grandly are Rama Navami, Maha Shivaratri and Navratri. The temple attracts a large crowd of devotees during these festivals. Of particular significance is the period of Navratra when thousands of people from the Rohtas,  Varanasi, Gaya, Aurangabad, Mirazpur come to the temple and a mela is held. During this period, the temple and the area around the hill is a riot of colour. Thousands of devotees and pilgrims visit Mundeswari Templeeach year.

This temple can be reached by road via Patna, Gaya, or Varanasi. The nearest railway station is 22 km away at Mohania - Bhabua Road Railway Station.
