Ashwini Kumaras or Ashvins are the gods of Ashwini Nakshatra (Also spelled Aswini, Aswathy, Asvini or Ashvati). Ashvini Kumaras are the golden armored horse headed twin Vedic deities who are regarded as the physicians of the celestial gods. They are mainly worship worshipped on Dwitiya, the second day in the lunar fortnight (Paksha) of the Hindu calendar.
Rig Veda mentions Ashvins as the sons of Lord Surya and Goddess Saranyu. Saranya is the wife of Sun God in his form as Vivasvant. The twin Vedic gods symbolizes the shining of sunrise and sunset. Nakula and Sahadeva of Pandavas are the sons of Ashvins.
Ashwini Kumars are also known as Nasatya in Rigveda. Nasatya is the name of one twin, while the other is called Dasra. Ashvini Kumaras are also considered as the Lords of Speed.
