Rukmini Wife of Lord Krishna

Rukmini is the first wife of Lord’s Krishna, as mentioned in Hindu scriptures and texts. She is regarded as the incarnation of Goddess Lakhsmi and is worshipped in few specific temples in India alongside her husband. The Bhagvata Purana talks about the dramatic kidnapping of Rukmini by Sree Krishna and their elopement to Dwarka, in order to prevent her marriage with Shishupal which was forced upon by her brother against her wishes. It is said that Rukmini was long in love with the lord and wrote him an elaborate letter inviting him to stop her marriage and instead accept her as his wife. Lord Krishna became pleased and overwhelmed by her devotion and planned and executed the episode with help from the Pandavas. Rukmini is also known by the names Ruciranana and Vaidarbhi.

Krishna with wife Rukmini and Sathyabhama

Most memorable incident – The Tulabharam incident as depicted in various scriptures, was the most memorable of the Krishna Rukmini saga where Rukmani competes with Krishna’s second wife Satyabhama and proves her love and pure devotion for the Lord, which is greater than every other of his queens. Satyabhama uses all her jewels to balance the physical balance on which Krishna is seated so that she could claim her husband, however it is Rukmini who wins the deal by placing simply a humble Tulsi leaf on the scale to weight it at par with Krishna’s weight. The episode showcased how true love and devotion cannot match up to all the material wealth in the world. Rukmini’s position as the mother of Dwarka and the lord principal wife gets re-established after Tulabharam sequence.
