Virochana was an asura king and the father of King Mahabali in Hindu mythology. Bali played an important role in the Varaha avatar of Lord Vishnu. Virochana was the son of Prahlada, the great devotee of Lord Narasimha. A Megha-vanshi asura, King Bali was born as the son of Virochana and his wife Devamba.
Chandogya Upanishad mentions Virochana along with King of Gods, Indra learned about the atman (self) from Prajapati and practised brahmacharya for 32 years. However, Virochana misapprehend the teachings of Prajapati and taught asuras to worship the body (sharira) as the atman.
A tale in Ganesha Purana states that asura king Virochana obtained a crown by Sun God Surya. The magical crown saves him against any harm. Mohini, the female avatar or Mahavishnu, steals his crown to assist Narayana to kill him.
