Chithirai Thiruvizha is one of the most popular festival celebrated at the world famous Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple, located at Madurai in the state of Tamil Nadu. The festival begins with flag hoisting ceremony and celebrations last for a period of 12 days. It is celebrated during the tamil month of Chithirai (April - May). In 2015, Chithirai Thiruvizha is on April 20th Monday and flag hosting ceremony is on 21st April, Tuesday.
Main Rituals performed in the Temple during Festivals are the coronation or pattabhishekam of Meenakshi Amman on the 8th day - 28th of April, 2015.
On the 9th day the Goddess is taken out in procession - 29th April
10th day is celebrated as the celestial wedding of Goddess Madurai Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar - 30th April, 2015. This wedding is one of the important event during the Chithirai festival.
Car festival is celebrated on the 11th day - 1st May
Theertha festival is celebrated on the 12th day with the Lord and Goddess going round Masi streets. Chithirai Thiruvizha ends on 2nd May 2015.
