Paush Purnima 2022 is the full moon day (Poornima) in the Hindu lunar month of Paush (December – January). The day is considered an auspicious day in Hindu calendar and marks the beginning of one month long austerity period observed by Hindu devotees. This year, Paush Purnima is also an important bathing date in the famous Allahabad Magh Mela. The date of Paush Purnima 2022 is on 17 January 2022.
During Paush Poornima, thousands of devotees in North India take a holy dip at Triveni Sangam at Prayag or at Dashashwamedh Ghat at Varanasi. Triveni Sangam is the confluence of three holy rivers – Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati – and is located at the temple town of Prayag in Allahabad. According to Hinduism, taking a holy bath at Sangam during Paush Purnima helps to cleanse all sins and attain moksha.
During the entire Magha month, devotees take early morning bath in Ganga, Yamuna or any other holy rivers. This daily bathing starts from Paush Poornima day and ends on Magha Purnima.
Other important festival which falls on Paush Purnima is Shakambari Jayanti. Charta festival in Chhattisgarh also coincides with Paush Poornima.
