Nageshwar Temple in Gujarat is a famous Jyotirlinga shrine of Shiva, located on the coast of Saurashtra, between Gomati Dwarka and the Bait Dwarka Island in India. The temple enshrines Shiva as Nagnath and it is believed that Nageshwar Linga offers protection from all poisons.
Significance of Nageshwar Shiva Linga
Generally, Shiva lingams are made of black stone. But Shivlinga at Nageshwar is only one of its kinds and is made from a stone known called as Dwarka Stone, which has small wheel marks on it. Another interesting feature is that the lingam is shaped like a three-faced oval Rudraksha, symbolizing the tears of Shiva. There is a Gomugam which collects the milk and water abhishekams (ablutions) and passes them out.
Usually, the lingam and Gomugam face the same direction. Here Shivalingam faces south and the Gomugam is facing east. There is a legend behind this. It is said that a devotee named Namdev was reciting prayers facing the lingam. As the other devotees were blocked of seeing the lingam, they asked him to move aside. Namdev asked the other devotees to indicate a direction where the Lord Shiva does not exist and that he would stand there. The furious devotees left him on the south side. To their surprise, the lingam turned south to face Namdev with the gomugam facing eastwards.
