Hindu Goddess Adi Lakshmi is one of the many forms of Goddess Mahalakshmi. Adi literally means eternal existence and Adi Lakshmi represents the never-ending nature of the Goddess. Adi Lakshmi is the ancient form of Goddess Lakshmi and the incarnation of the goddess as the daughter of the Sage Bhrigu.
Adi Lakshmi is also known as Ramaa Lakshmi and Indira. Indira means the one who holds lotus or purity in the hands or heart. While Ramaa means the one who brings happiness to the mankind. Adi Lakshmi is normally depicted serving Lord Narayana which represents her serving the whole creation.
Appearance
Adi Lakshmi is the first manifestation among the Ashta Lakshmi. In this form the goddess is depicted seated on a lotus with 4 arms. The first two arms show Abhaya mudra and Varada mudra, while one arm carries a Padma (lotus) and the other carries a white flag.
In some miniature painting we can see Adi Lakshmi is represented with many arms. She is sometimes depicted sitting in the lap of Mahavishnu.
