Dahi Handi 2021 date is on 31 August Tuesday. Dahi Handi is an important festival celebrated one day after Sri Krishna Janmashtami Festival. The festival is more popular in Maharashtra and Goa and is organized to celebrate the birth of Sree Krishna. On Dahi Handi day, Govinda players (mainly young boys and girls) gather under the Dahi Handi pot and create a human pyramid to catch and then break handi (an earthern pot) hung high in the air.
The Govinda who climbs over the human pyramid tries to break the pot with a nariyal (coconut). The buttermilk inside the pot will be spilled over the entire group, which symbolizes their achievement through unity.

Dahi Handi remembers Lord Krishna’s play of stealing makhan (butter) or dahi (curd) from pots in houses in Vrindavan. The players of are known as Bal Gopals or Govindas. Dahi Handi pot is filled with is a clay pot filled with buttermilk and in some places a mixture of poha (beaten rice), curd, sugar and pickle. The pot is beautifully decorated with flowers and currency notes.
Dahi Handi is also known as Gopalakala or Govinda sport. Several Hindu organizations and societies organize the competition in various places.
