Dakshineswar Kali Temple Kolkata

Dakshineswar Kali Temple in Kolkata belongs to West Bengal state in India. The marvelous structure which lies on the banks of River Hooghly is a well known worshiping center. The monument was constructed by Rani Rasmani the queen of Janbazar in the year 1847. It is said that she had enlightenment from the Goddess to construct such a divine monument. Dakshineswar Kali Temple is built in traditional Navaratna or nine spires style of Bengal architecture. The temple premises cover an area of 25 acres making the entire structure the largest in Kolkata. The area of the main shrine is 46 square feet which locates at a height of 100 feet. The roof of the spires of the temple is handcrafted artistically to make it spectacular. It was at this temple where Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa offered sacraments to his favorite deity.

Dakshineswar Kali Temple Deities

Dakshineswar Kali Temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhavatarini, an aspect of Kali Maa. The temple is constructed in three floors with excellent style. In the main shrine the colossal statue of Goddess Kali is enshrined on a silver lotus flower having thousands of petals. One of the legs of the idol is on the body of Lord Shiva who is lying horizontally on the flower. Encircling the sanctum sanctorum of Goddess Kali there are twelve subsidiary shrines dedicated to Mahadev where the rituals are performed on Shiva Lingams. The monument dedicated to queen Rasmoni is located near the main entrance of the temple. Apart from these, there is one beautiful shrine for Lord Lakshminarayan where Lord Vishnu together with his consort Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped. The graceful look of this monument attracts the devotees arriving here.

The temple darshan timings are from 6:00 AM to 12.30 PM and 3:00 PM to 8:30 PM.

Ramakrishna Paramahamsa Room

The room inside the temple where Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa used to pray is near the north-west corner of the temple and opened to visitors during temple hours. Here, the bed used by him is well preserved and exhibited. It was from this temple that he had the sacred enlightenment which enabled him to have the clear vision of spiritualism. Then he worked for the universal harmony of all religions till his last breath. Nowadays this Kali temple in Kolkata stands as the symbol of communal unity. Numerous devotees from all parts of the nation arrive here with a red hibiscus flower and incense sticks for offering prayers to the Goddess. It is said that the raw spiritual energy prevailing in the temple premise encircles the devotees to render them desires for unity with a divine relief.
