Hampi Archaeological Museum is located at Kamalapura, a small village located at the southern fringe of the Hampi ruins. The museum is maintained by the Archeological Survey of India and exhibits collections of stone sculptures, artifacts, Neolithic tools and antiquities of Vijayanagar ruins. There are four main sections in the museum.
Exhibits in Archaeological Museum Hampi
The first one exhibits the Hampi model and the second section is dedicated to the sculptures and idols from the Hampi ruins. Most prominent among them are the artifacts that belong to the Veerabhadra cult and Shiva worship. Displays in this section include Veerabhadra (the demon God created by Lord Shiva), Bhairava (Shiva in the fearsome posture on hearing the death of his consort, Sati), Bhikshatana-murthi (depicting Shiva in his simple aspect, wandering and begging with a bowl made of human skull), Mahishasura Mardini (a fearsome aspect of the goddess Shakti ), Shakti, Kartikeya (the God created by Shiva out of fire) and Vinayaka (the elephant headed god born to Shiva and Parvati.
The third section displays a series of tools, arms, coinages and other objects that were used during the Vijayanagara Empire period. Special feature is the book like documents which are made of brass and bundled with a ring.
Fourth section, the oldest of all display objects, features a series of antiquities from the prehistoric and proto historic period, hero stones (stone projection dedicated to heroes who died in battle) and sati stones (Stone projections in memorial of wives who committed suicide after the death of husbands in the battle), stucco figurines, portions of porcelain pottery from the excavated sites and a gallery of the excavation photographs.
Hampi Archaeological Museum Timings
Tourists can visit from 10.00 AM to 5.00 PM. Entrance Fee is Rs. 5/- per head. The museum is closed on Fridays and other national holidays.
