Aryankavu Temple Kollam Kerala

Aryankavu Temple is a famous Lord Ayyappa Temple located in Kollam District of Kerala, India. The temple is also known as Aryankavu Sastha Temple and is one of the 5 important temples of Ayyappan in Kerala. The significance of Aryankavu Temple is that Lord Ayyappa is enshrined here as a teenager. Ayyappan Swamy is known as Tiruaryan here and the place got its name after that.

The unique feature of Aryankavu Ayyappa Temple is that the shrine is constructed about 35 ft below the road level. The temple enshrines a young Ayyappa sits in the middle with Parvathi and Shiva on either side. The daily poojas and rituals are followed as per Tamil tradition. Similar to Sabarimala Sree Dharma Shasta Temple, women between the ages of 10 and 50 are not allowed inside the temple. According to legends, Swamy Ayyappan married Shri Pushkaladevi of Sourashtra community in Aryankavu. The Thrikalyanam Festival is celebrated to commemorate the divine wedding.

Sabarimala Mandala Maholsavam and Trikalyanam Festival are the major festivals celebrated at the temple. Other festivals celebrated are Pandiyanmudippu and Kumbhabhishekam.

Aryankavu is located 73 km east of Kollam and 31 km from Punalur. The temple can be reached by travelling on Trivandrum – Thenkasi National Highway or Kollam - Punalur – Thenkasi road. The Punalur – Shenkottai meter gauge railway line passes through Aryankavu.

Palaruvi Waterfalls is a major tourist attraction located near Aryankavu Temple. Achankovil Temple in Kollam is another important shrine of Lord Ayyappa, where Ayyappan is enshrined along with his two consorts Poorna and Pushkala.
