Narak Chaturdashi or Naraka Chaturdashi is a Hindu festival which is celebrated one day before the famous Diwali Festival. Also known as Kali Chaudas, Narak Chaturdashi festival falls on the 14th day of the dark half of Ashwin month (October – November). Naraka Chaturdasi marks the victory of Lord Krishna and his wife Satyabhama over the demon Narakasura or Naraka.
Narak Chaturdashi
Narak Chaturdashi is observed as the second day of the 5 days Diwali festival in North India, and hence the festival is also known as Choti Diwali. However, in South India, the festival is observed on the Deepavali day. In 2023, the date of Narak Chaturdashi is on 12 November 2023.
Rituals of Narak Chaturdashi
Lord Yama is also worshipped on this day to get rid of the fear of demon Narakasuran. In some places people create statue of Narakasura, and burn it on the outskirts to represent the death of demon Naraka and the victory of good over evil. To celebrate the victory, sparkling fireworks are lit until early morning.
