The annual festival at Chengannur Mahadeva Temple in Kerala will begin on December. Known as Varshikotsavam, the 28 days long annual festival begins on Thiruvathira nakshatram (star) in the Malayalam month of Dhanu (mid December – mid January) and ends on Thiruvathira nakshatra in the Malayalam month of Makaram (mid January – mid February). Thiruvathira nakshatra (star) in the Dhanu masam is considered very auspicious – it is believed that it is on this day Goddess Parvathi took a fast for the well-being of her divine-half, Lord Shiva.
Special poojas will be held at Chengannur Mahadeva and Bhagawathy Temple during the annual festival days. Thousands of devotees from all over Kerala visit the temple to seek the blessing of Lord Siva.
