Ganga Saptami or Ganga Jayanti is celebrated on the 7th day (Saptami) of Sukla Paksa, or the waxing fortnight of the full moon in the month of Baisakhi or Vaisakhi (April – May).
According to Brahma Purana, Ganga Saptami, also known as Jahnu Saptami, is said to be day Goddess Ganga descended on to the Earth in the Himalayas. Hence every year the Saptami day of the Shukla Paksha in Vaisakhi month is celebrated as Ganga Saptami or the birthday of Mother Ganga River. This year, Ganga Saptami Festival 2022 is on May 8.
In Haridwar, Rishikesh and some other regions, Ganga Saptami is celebrated as the day Ganga River descended from the celestial region onto Lord Shiva’s matted locks and then a few drops of Ganga fell from Lord Shiv’s head onto the Himalayas. While in Kashi (Varanasi), Ganga Jayanti is observed as the day Ganga River descended from the celestial region to earth and Ganga Dussehra is regarded as the day when River Ganges reached the plains of India at Haridwar.
While another popular legend about Ganga Saptami is the River Ganga violently entered into Sage Jahnu Rishi’s ashram and there by disturbing his meditation. Sage Jahnu was much powerful than Ganga River and overwhelmed by anger, Jahnu Rishi drank Ganga and later released the Ganga through his ear. This is another reason why Ganga Saptami is also known as Jahnu Saptami.
On the occasion of Ganga Saptami several pujas and rituals are offered to Goddess Ganga.
