Hi All
ReplyDeleteI am asking my son to recite "Suklam Baradaram Vishnum" sloka and he is able to say it back o his own, but now he is asking what is the meaning of each word of the sloka.
I have told him Chathurbhuja means Four Hands and Prasanna Vadana means happy and smily face with my half knowldedge. But he is asking me what is the meaning of Dhayaayeth?
so can you please let me know the over all meaning of the sloka and if possible word to word (i remember in tenth standard we have some thing called prathipadaartham for a poem).
Thanks in advance
Parthasarathi Yerra
The word -by - word translation for the sloka " Suklam baradharam" is as follows :
DeleteFirst the sloka can be split as following , only for translation purpose. Please dont split like this while chanting it.
Shukla-Ambara-Dharam Vissnnum Shashi-Varnnam Catur-Bhujam |
Prasanna-Vadanam Dhyaayet Sarva-Vighno[a-U]pashaantaye ||
Shukla ( White) -Ambara ( Cloth) -Dharam ( wear) - He who wears white cloth
Vissnnum - Present everywhere
Shashi-Varnnam - color of moon ( white )
Catur-Bhujam | - Four Hands
Prasanna-Vadanam - Smiling Faced
Dhyaayet - Meditate
Sarva-Vighno[a-U]pashaantaye || - All three Vignas, ( obstecles) will be put off!
The meaning of the whole sloka goes like this :
When, the Lord who wears white cloth, who is omnipresent, who shines like moon, is meditated upon, all the three vignas will subside.
The Three kinds of vignas are : Adhyatmika,( Problems that arise due to self ) Adhibhautika ( Problems that arise from external factors ) and Adidaivika ( Problems that are faced as a large group like natural calamities, war etc ) .
These vignas cannot be eliminated in a single prayer , their strength can be reduced slowly, When one constantly meditates on Vigneshwara , the lord of destruction of vignas !
Note: There is also some argument that this sloka refers to Shri Vishnu, cause of the usage of the word "Vishnum" and Chatur bhujam ( Ganesha is supposed to be 5 handed, including his trunk) . But in general, When this sloka is chanted, Lord Ganesha is mediated upon!
Hope this helped. :)
